Magic the Gathering Arena

The rules contained on this page only cover this specific game, please review the GENERAL COMPETITION RULES for information covering all official tournaments.


1. Anti-Cheat

No additional anti-cheat is required for official matches.


2. Match Procedure

2.1. Series Lengths

Matches will be played in a best of 3 series

2.2. Game Lobby

The home player will invite the away player through a direct challenge using the Tournament Match game settings. 


3. Tournament Rules 

3.1. Game Connections

All players taking part in Generation Esports tournaments are required to have an active game account for the tournament they’re participating in connected to their Generations Esports account. All game connection information shown on a team’s roster must match with the accounts in game. Players using different accounts or those not officially on the roster are prohibited from playing in matches. Only one account connection is allowed per game, the use of alternate accounts is prohibited. All account connections are prohibited from being changed after the team has participated in its first match of a tournament’s regular season.

If a player’s name does not match what is shown on their roster, please reach out to a Generation Esports Administrator in Discord for assistance while the game is still being played. Name discrepancy reports will not be accepted after a match has been completed. 

3.1.1. Account Ownership

Game accounts used in official tournaments must belong to the student participating using that game connection. At no point in time may players share accounts with each other or use an account of another person, regardless of if they are in the tournament or not.

3.2. Match Streaming

3.2.1. Spectators

MTG  Arena does not have a match spectator client for direct challenges. 

3.2.2. Player Streaming

Players may stream to their personal twitch or youtube channel if they are participating in the match. The match may only be streamed from the player’s in-game point of view and should have at least a 3 minute delay set to prevent possible incidents of stream sniping.

Players may not at any time stream another player or roster’s match on their personal channel.


4. Restrictions

4.1. Other Game Modes

The use of other game mode challenges are prohibited for official matches. These game modes include

  • Challenge Match
  • Limited Tournament Match
  • Historic Tournament Match
  • Alchemy Tournament Match
  • Explorer Tournament Match

If an incorrect game mode is used, the match must be stopped immediately and a Generation Esports administrator must be notified. The match will then need to be remade with both players using the same decks they previously chose. No edits to the decks, including the use of sideboards may be used during the match rehosting. Multiple usages of incorrect match settings may result in a forfeit loss and further disciplinary action. 

4.2. Match Resets

Match resets are prohibited in official matches, unless authorized by a Generation Esports Administrator. If a match reset is authorized, both players must use the same deck they previously chose, and will not be allowed to edit their deck (add/remove cards, use of sideboards). 

4.3. Coaching

Players may not be coached by any means, once a match has started. 

4.4. Stream Sniping

Players may not view their opponent’s stream or have another person feeding them information from the stream. Players caught stream sniping may face an ejection from the tournament or other disciplinary actions. 


5. Stoppage of Play

5.1. Player Disconnections

Should a player disconnect from a game once it has started, the game will be awarded as a forfeit win for the opposing player. If a player is experiencing technical difficulties, they must report the issue to a Generation Esports Administrator immediately . 


6. Team Rosters

Magic the Gathering Arena rosters are limited to 1 player, rosters that have more than 1 player will be unable to participate in official matches until the player count on the roster is reduced to 1. No substitutions may be made at any time.
