MSEL Splatoon™ 3 Rules

The rules contained on this page only cover this specific game, please review the MSEL General Competition Rules for information covering all official tournaments. 

1. Anti-Cheat

No additional anti-cheat is required for official matches.

2. Match Procedure

2.1. Series Lengths

Matches will be played in a best of 5 series, including matches for the playoffs and finals.

2.2. Game Lobby

A member of the home team will create a private lobby and share the lobby password with all participating players. In order to join players will need both the password and to be on the friends list of the host player. 

The lobby settings should be set to the following

  • Password: The host player will set a password
  • Mode: Turf War for stage 1
  • Stage: Dependent on the stage chosen in 2.3
  • Primary Gear Abilities Only: Off

If the incorrect settings or game mode are used, the match must be restarted. Please reach out to an HSEL Administrator through the widget found in the lower right of our website the moment the wrong settings are noticed for assistance. 

2.3. Game Modes and Stage Picks

The Game modes will be playing in the following order for a Best of 5 series. 

  • Turf War
  • Rainmaker
  • Splat Zones
  • Tower Control
  • Clam Blitz

Home picks the first stage for Turf War, then the loser of each previous game type will pick the stage for the next game type. 

EX: Home team wins Turf War, so the Away team will pick the stage for Rainmaker. Away team then wins Rainmaker, so Home team will pick the stage for Splat Zones.

3. Tournament Rules 

3.1. Game Connections

All players taking part in High School Esports League tournaments are required to have a Nintendo Account for the tournament they’re participating in connected to their Generation Esports account in the form of a game connection. All game connection information shown on a team’s roster must match with the accounts in game. Players using different accounts or those not officially on the roster are prohibited from playing in matches. Only one account connection is allowed per game, the use of alternate accounts is prohibited. All account connections are prohibited from being changed after the team has participated in its first match of a tournament’s regular season.

If a player’s name does not match what is shown on their roster, please reach out to an HSEL Administrator through the live chat widget found in the lower right of our website for assistance while the game is still being played. Name discrepancy reports will not be accepted after a match has been completed. 

3.2. Match Streaming

3.2.1. Spectators

Spectators are permitted in game lobbies for the sole purpose of streaming their team’s match to the School’s Twitch or Youtube channel or to record the match. Spectators may not have any communication with team members while the game is currently being played and must not be a member of the roster participating in the match. At the end of the match, the stream vod or an unedited copy of the recording must be shared with the other team. 

4. Restrictions

4.1. Disallowed Item(s)

The use of Splatfest Tees is prohibited. 

5. Stoppage of Play

5.1. Player Disconnection

If the player disconnects before game play begins (teams start to ink the stage or engage in combat) the game may be reset. The same stage must be used for the reset game. In the event where a player disconnects while the game is being played, the game will continue as a 3v4. If a team loses 2 or more players at the same time, that team will forfeit the current game, the match series will then continue on to the next game if any remain to be played. If players are experiencing multiple disconnections, please contact an HSEL Administrator through the live chat widget found in the lower right of our website

5.2. Team Disconnection

If a team disconnects before gameplay begins (teams has started inking the stage, or started to engage in combat) the game may be reset. The same stage must be used for the reset game. In the event where a team disconnects during game play, that disconnected team will forfeit the current game, the match series will then continue on to the next game if any remain to be played. If a team is experiencing multiple disconnections or other technical difficulties, please contact an MSEL Administrator. 

6. Organization Rosters

Splatoon 3  rosters require a minimum of 4 players and are limited to a maximum of 8 players (4 starting players and 4 substitute players). Rosters that do not meet the minimum or exceed the maximum number of players will not be allowed to participate in official matches until their roster size meets the set requirements. Player Substitutions may be made between games.
